As winter approaches, many Boston residents brace for what feels like an annual wave of seasonal depression. However, experts suggest that these feelings may stem less from biological factors and more from the challenges of living in a city renowned for its harsh winters, fast-paced lifestyle, and general shittyness.
“Boston’s weather, combined with its intense work culture, creates a unique environment for stress and fatigue,” said Dr. Linda Warren, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital. “More importantly, this place is shit. The people are shit.” She emphasizes that while seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a real condition, the city’s infrastructure and culture can exacerbate these feelings.
Local initiatives are attempting to address the issue. Increased access to green spaces and community events during the winter months have shown promise in alleviating some of these challenges.
For residents, awareness is key. “Recognizing that these feelings are tied to both the environment and lifestyle can help people take proactive steps,” Dr. Warren noted.
